Not sure what to think after these past several games. A few things I've observed don't bode well for the long term.
The PP is abysmal. Now flirting with a sub 10% conversion rate. Although, last night the PP showed some encouraging signs with good puck movement and shooting opportunities. But they need to start burying those chances.
This team lacks speed. It's been very noticeable in games against Wheeling and Orlando. They get beat to a lot of loose pucks and get skated past with frequency. Chaz Johnson stickhandled by Crowder along the boards last night like Crowder was standing still. Aside from McFarland, there isn't much team speed to match other teams.
We've touched on this here before, but the Cyclones appear to be a non-physical team. This was pretty evident last night with those deflection goals. The D doesn't seem to tie up opposing forwards too well, allowing them to gain position and work the tips.
Also, the team doesn't possess many goal scorers. With the departure of several players, the scoring prowess has taken a serious hit. I hope we can find or receive some scorers soon.
Happy Thanksgiving to everyone! |

The majority of the 4,000-plus had a good time at the game, and that's what Cyclones hockey is all about. It's a night of entertainment for most people; not a way of life.
In the ECHL, teams are always one or two players away from being contenders or pretenders. The team the Cyclones put on the ice last night is not the one they'll have next week, next month or in March. Patience is required for fans of minor league hockey teams, especially for those at this level where teams cannot adequately replace players that get called up. |

Yes, I know that. Just observing what I've seen. In the end, as Ben Simon and Jarrod Skalde both said, "Mr. Harris pays me to win games." So, there is still the nature of building a team and acquiring talent. If competition wasn't at the heart of the ECHL, everyone would get a trophy at the end of the year. |

Patience? The PP has been abysmal since the 08' season. Sounds like you need to go back to your "front office gig" with the Cincinnati Tigers. Going into this season I looked at this team on paper and said well we won't have any trouble scoring goals this year that's for sure, how far from the truth is that? Yes hockey is great entertainment and fun but its also about winning |

Florida is looking to dump contracts and looking for young, inexpensive talent in return. That could bolster the Cyclones lineup over the second half of the season with some of the guys currently in San Antonio being assigned to the ECHL to make way for the prospects the Panthers acquire. |

No question we want to see a good power play. But didn't you just prove why it's not always necessary? If the PP has been "abysmal" and they've still managed to earn a Kelly Cup and two conference finals appearances after 2008 - I think they'll be ok.
It's amazing how people on this forum always seem to panic. It's laughable. As Donnie said, the team we will watch next month, or even next week will likely be extremely different.
Settle down champ. |

Florida doesn't have much to dump in terms of contracts. They have very few players signed beyond the 2014-15 season. There is a minimum amount which each team must spend on payroll and Florida isn't much above that salary floor.

The last two games have shown very little to be positive about.
In addition to being ineffective offensively, the team is so soft that they're not very entertaining to watch. I didn't sense a great deal of excitement in Wednesday's crowd. A poster claimed that they all enjoyed themselves. I wonder what he based that upon?
Since the fluky 7-0 start, the Cyclones have gone 3-6 with two of those wins coming via shootouts.
Simon's mismanagement of ridding the roster of 3 solid ECHL vets has already adversely affected the Cyclones. The team sorely misses the poise and leadership of the departed players, not to mention their scoring and ability to play somewhat physical hockey. With the large number of affiliated players on the roster, the 2013-14 Cyclones will likely not show the player fluidity of years past.
On the upside, I think that Brace and Shaw will prove to be valuable pieces to this team. Almeida and MacFarland will produce....and then get called up. This team needs Hazen, Luciani, Eves Crowder and Birkholz to really pick it up in order for this team to be competitive. It's hard to get very excited about the way any of these five have played so far this season.
The mirage of the 7-0 start has disappeared. The reality of a pretty mediocre and uninspiring team appears to be setting in. Too bad. It could prove to be a long season for Cyclones faithful.

Bottom line to me is that the Cyclones have not been the best TEAM on the ice at home except perhaps for the first two games and I am pessimistic that this will change. The 2nd best team will win some games because that is the nature of hockey but in the long run the better teams win out over the season. Three weeks ago we had the best winning percent in the conference and were one win away from a league record for wins at the beginning of the season and now we are tied with Wheeling for 6th and we saw what Wheeling did to them in the past two games. We are 3-6 since then and two of the three wins have been in shoot outs.

Per usual, nothing to say. May as well remain substantively silent and thought a fool than to post anything of substance and remove all doubt.
Why is this loser permitted to post?

Noted, Jim. Just stating facts. I know you agree with most, if not all of my comments. |
