On the heels of a five game losing streak and eight losses in the last eleven, the Cyclone are getting back Crowder and Luciani. Hopefully, their offensive production can help Cincinnati break out of this funk.
At the other end of the ice, they need to shore up the D. The opposition possesses the puck for long periods in the zone, creating chaos defensively. It seems like they really miss Wysopal. He's not big, but he plays well positionally and is able to skate the puck out of the zone. |

Reed has also been missing which caused them to skate with 5 d on Friday and Saturday. Simon dropped Eves back to D on Sunday. |

Hate to sound like a broken record but what we are seeing is the result of the defensive scheme the team plays in its own zone. It is a positional passive scheme rather than an aggressive coverage system. We don't close on the puck carrier but rather position to deny him the pass or get him to shoot from the outside or a bad angle or use the stick to poke check or sweep check the puck away. Our wall game is very passive thus the opposition easily keeps control of the puck. In effect it is applying the philosophy used in penalty killing to the full strength defense.
It is frustrating to watch but to be fair it is the scheme played by most NHL teams. Very few ECHL teams use it though as it takes real skill and five man discipline. My guess is that Simon and the Cyclones have been asked to use it by their affiliates. Watch the difference Wednesday night vs Ft Wayne who play the aggressive man coverage scheme. We get the puck in their zone and they are in our face. They get the puck in our zone and we start to position ourselves to deny passes and good shots. I dislike the positional scheme as I was taught that when playing defense you deny space and time and close on the puck handler and I have a hard time breaking the habit of looking for that. |

Luciani played for SA Friday, didn't dress for the game Saturday there also, and then SA had Sunday off. He was assigned back to us on Sunday so am surprised he didnt play in Evansville Sunday night. Shalla is the other piece we miss. Anyone know his status? Haven't seen him since he got hit in the face a few games back |

When I was watching the game at gametime, I heard Nick Brunker say his flight was cancelled. |

I am writing this in hopes that the Cyclones will prove me wrong this week. Last weekends' games showed me what appeared to be a glaring disparity in talent between our top players and the rest of the team. With our top half dozen guys not playing, it seemed like the team could not execute an offense or make a play on defense. And these were home games with decent crowds against lesser opponents. My observation was that it was not lack of effort - I saw guys staying focused and skating hard for the entirety of both weekend games - it seemed to me that they just did not have the necessary skills to be effective. Having never played the game, it was a real wakeup call to me how difficult the game must be if guys that have played with success through college or junior hockey and have a couple of years of professional experience can still struggle to play effectively at this level.
Now, let's hope the Clones make me look like an idiot play dominating tomorrow night. |

@Kings of the monkeys - This is the exact reason I'm not a fan of getting "stacked" with players from our affiliates. Sure it's great if they're here all season but if a coach has to hold 15 spots for affiliated players (as Simon had to do to start this season) it makes it really hard to bring in quality free agent guys. Fast forward into the season when the AHL starts calling up players and you're left to plug the holes with anyone you can get. The Clones have had multiple players from the SPHL and FHL on the roster this season. And while those guys weren't completely out of sorts there is clearly a reason they weren't on ECHL level contracts.
Also, FLA/SAN has already moved the contracts of a few guys that spent time here this season for either "future considerations" or for guys that have no chance of trickling our way. They moved Philippe Cornet, who is a legit AHL level player, for Adan Brace, who is proving to be nothing more then an ECHL level guy thus far. Miskovic was involved with deal and while it didn't involve a player the Cyclones saw this season they recently traded a FWD to CHI. All these moves open up roster spots in San Antonio making it unlikely we see Shaw, Megan or McFarland again because of a "numbers situation" up the ladder.
