Desharnais broke a 3 game pointless streak with 2 assists in the Canadiens 5-1 victory over Ottawa on Friday night.

He now has 57 points which place him Tied for 42nd in the entire NHL.

His 41 assists rank him in a tie for 20th in the NHL.

Among centers, his 41 assists place him in a tie for 10th.

36 points in last 37 games.

In his last half season of play (41 games), DD has accumulated 37 points. This 74 point pace would have put him 15th among all NHLers last season and probably about same ranking this year by the time the season is finished. His full season totals are 58 points in 78 games. He's tied for 50th in league scoring. He's 20th among centers. His 42 assists rank tied for 23rd overall and tied for 12th among centers.

I look forward to seeing what numbers he puts up next season after removing any doubts that he is a legitimate NHL player through his play this season. A repeat of this season's approximately 60 points would be quite acceptable and could earn him a very nice contract ($3-4m per year for 3 or 4 years) for the 2013-14 season and beyond.

New Montreal GM may not value him as much as you do.

If the new GM is Doug Risebrough, he likes big, strong centermen in the Joel Otto mold.

Perhaps not. But, he's now a proven commodity in the NHL. When guys like Renee Bourque command $3 million per season and get long term contracts, I don't think it's unreasonable to expect that DD would earn similar money.

Everyone likes big, strong centers. Desharnais' lack of size alone would probably make him most GMs ideal #2 center. In any case, a player who can produce in the 55-60 point range in the modern NHL is going to be able to find himself a spot on the roster of the majority of teams and be compensated generously.

Nothing in Montreal can be expected to remain the same for next season. I wouldn't at all be surprised to see DD's line get split up with either Cole or Pacioretty going elsewhere. The new GM/Coaching staff might decide to put Plekanec back as the #1 center.

I would think that he is pretty safe not to be traded given his bargain basement salary and that he probably wouldn't bring even value in a trade. His success this season and French lineage would probably preclude the new GM from doing so even if he wanted to.

Former Cincinnati Mighty Ducks right wing Pierre Parenteau has had a better year than Desharnais. He was in demand at the trade deadline and will get a nice raise.

A couple of points to the better but he's more or less a passenger on Taveres' line. A minus player as well. DD is the straw that stirs the drink on the Canadiens first line.

If he's the straw that stirs the drink then that explains why the Canadiens aren't a playoff team.

BTW ... playoff teams were trying to get Parenteau at the trade deadline, including Pittsburgh and St. Louis. Desharnais wasn't coveted by teams hoping to capture Lord Stanley's Cup.

Guess they must not have wanted him that badly. Somehow or another, I think that they would have gotten him if they really needed him.

I never would have dreamed that he would be a top 30 scorer in the NHL. He never stood out to me when he played on the Ducks. He spent 5 1/2 years in the minors and had 5 NHL games to his credit before he made it in the NHL for keeps at the age of 26.

I noticed that he spent a few games with Augusta in the ECHL after his stint in Cincinnati. So technically he's another ECHLer who made it to the show.

It's always great to see guys who weren't expected to be in the NHL make it in a big way. Not too many 9th round picks ever make it to the NHL for one game, let alone accomplish what he has. Good for him.

Stirs the drink on his line.

Beyond the first line and Plekanec, the Canadien forwards are not very good offensively. The Canadiens stand a pretty good chance of finishing in the bottom 3 of the league this year. If they finish below Edmonton, they could end up with the #1 pick overall via some lottery luck. I hope that doesn't happen because it would be great to see a #1 overall in Columbus next season.

Parenteau was sent to Augusta for conditioning purposes when he was returning from injury.

The Islanders were asking for a second-round pick and a prospect for him, which was too rich for any teams blood.

Parenteau wasn't a checker or grinder so he wasn't a fit on anyone's third or fourth lines in the NHL. He had fo find a spot where he could play in the top six, which he did on Long Island.

I saw every game he played in a Cincinnati uniform and another dozen or so when he was with Portland and Norfolk. While he kept improving in the essential parts of the game, I had him projected as a depth guy for NHL teams; someone that could provide short-term help. I didn't think he'd play regularly in the NHL, especially on the first line. But he worked hard and earned the opportunity, and has taken advantage of it.
