CINCINNATI, Ohio – The Cincinnati Cyclones, proud affiliate of the NHL’s Florida Panthers and Nashville Predators, announced today that Jarrod Skalde has accepted an Assistant Coach position with the Norfolk Admirals in the American Hockey League. He becomes the second Cyclones bench boss in club history to receive a promotion to the Triple-A level.
Skalde (SKALD-ee), a 42-year-old Niagara Falls, Ontario native, helped lead the Cyclones to their first North Division title since 2009 this past season. The Cyclones’ 42-22-8 record resulted in 92 points, a 13-point improvement from 2011-12 as well as the third-most wins and second-most points they have earned since the club returned to the ECHL for the 2006-07 season. The 2012-13 campaign was also the earliest a Cyclones team had clinched a Division Title. On April 2, Skalde was named the 2012-13 ECHL Coach of the Year. Under his regime, Cincinnati saw 68 players earn AHL promotions resulting in nearly 900 games played at Triple-A.
“Jarrod has been an excellent asset to our organization,” said Cyclones President Ray Harris. “We’re very thankful for his three years of professionalism and tireless work ethic. I’m proud of the job he has done in Cincinnati and wish him the best of luck moving forward as he progresses to the next level of professional hockey.”
During his three-year tenure behind the bench in the Queen City, Skalde amassed a 110-79-27 regular season record (57.2 winning percentage) and a 10-11 mark in the postseason. The former second-round draft pick earned his 100th Cyclones victory this past year when Cincinnati defeated the Fort Wayne Komets 3-1 on February 22, 2013. He and his wife, Erin have a 15-year-old daughter, True and 10-year-old son, Skate. It will be the second time that Skalde has been in the Anaheim organization; he logged 20 games as a player with the Mighty Ducks during the 1993-94 season, where he collected nine points (5 goals, 4 assists) and 10 penalty minutes.
“I’d like to thank Ray Harris for this opportunity that he gave me three years ago,” said Skalde. “He has given me all the tools to succeed here and has taught me a lot along the way. I’d also like to thank the entire front office staff, hockey department, and my Assistant Coach Matt Macdonald for all their support. I leave here knowing that this is the premiere place to be in the ECHL, and it starts from the top.“
Cincinnati has not yet named a replacement for Skalde, however, the interview process is currently underway. In addition, Cyclones Assistant Coach Matt Macdonald will remain on the coaching staff for 2013-14.
The countdown to the 2013 First Face-Off is officially on! The Cyclones open the season at U.S. Bank Arena against the Wheeling Nailers on Saturday, October 19 at 7:30pm. The game will be preceded by the Power Play 5K Run/Walk to benefit Pink Ribbon Girls! For details or to register, visit CyclonesHockey.com/5k. Season ticket packages are also on sale now! We really don't have time. Matt MacDonald will be back so that at least means there will be some continuity but this is the time of year when much of the recruiting and signing actually happens. There needs to be a coach in place as soon as possible. |

Today is July 9... Chuck left on July 27... we have an extra 18 days... Matt MacDonald is a worthy look as far as head coaches are concerned based on his knowledge of the current roster and veterans. My problem with MacDonald is his inexperience... it was his first full season as a coach in any level, so if we go the route to do a quick hire with MacDonald, I say we would have to hire a very experienced assistant who can be like a mentor to him |

If putting out a winning product year in and year out is your standard, then you need to stop following minor league sports. It is nearly impossible for any minor league organization to do that because so much of the roster is in the control of the parent organization, or organizations in the case of the Cyclones. That is especially true in hockey where so much of your success is dependent on your goalie, a position that the minor league team has almost no say on. |

You totally missed my point of all this... so here are the cliffnotes: As a hockey fan and a longtime fan of the Clones, knowing the tradition of winning that was enforced by Chuck Weber, I demand a competitive winning hockey team... what I DONT demand is what is impossible in minor league sports: domination and a very long string of championships. Once in awhile, the pieces won't fit right, but at the same time Cincinnati deserves the continuation of winning hockey. |

When Chuck left roughly 2/3rds of the 2010 team had signed on to return. They were guys suited to play a defensive brand of hockey but were basically forced into playing Jarrod's more uptempo offensive schemes and we saw how well that worked out. IMO, the sooner a new coach is hired the sooner he can begin shaping the roster. Also, Chuck left after NHL prospect camps, which he was typically involved with to some extent. These are the camps the really lay the foundation for how players filter down through NHL, AHL and eventually ECHL camps. Many of these players are signed to NHL contracts but many are also invitees who can be signed by the AHL or ECHL clubs (This is how we ended up with David Desharnais for a glorious season). These camps are when the club really gets an idea for who might filter down and how many spots will be available for free agents. It's quite important to get a coach involved in this so he can continue the recruiting process and bring in quality free agent players. Luckily, the Cyclones have 2 things going for them: 1) Matt MacDonald staying on keeps some continuity and allows some level of scouting and recruiting to occur, and 2) Cincinnati has developed a reputation for getting players to the next level so players want to come here.
That being said, I still think a coach should be hired sooner rather than later. I trust Mr Harris to bring in the right guy. As long as it's not Stevie Martinson or Malcolm Cameron, I'll be open minded. |

quote: Jarrod did the best he could do, but I think realized he was overwhelmed as a head coach and took to the AHL to season himself, and that is not exactly a bad thing... my criteria for standards will continue to be like it was in Chuck and Dean's tenure, and the new coach will be held to those by me... and I hope by my other fellow diehard Clones fans!
I'm a long time lurker on this board and decided to join when I read a few of these posts about Coach Skalde.
Skalde was "overwhelmed"???? He was named Coach of the Year. He was arguably unlucky not to get to the KC finals this past season. He was just hired by an AHL team. Overwhelmed coaches don't get their teams to the KC CF, earn COY honors and then get promoted to a job in a league one step away from the NHL.
Do you hold Dean Stork to the standards of Dean Stork? Do you know that Stork's Greenville Road Warriors have won 1 playoff game in the past 2 years? His teams are 1-7 in the past 2 playoff years. Dean Stork still hasn't been promoted to the AHL after 7 seasons in the ECHL. Chuck Weber's teams in the AHL only made one playoff series in the 3 years he was there before his recent firing and his team finished 29th in a 30 team league this past season. Chuck Weber now has the same coaching status as Skalde does. Jarrod Skalde far exceeded the standards set by both Weber and Stork in the past 3 seasons.
Skalde did a fine job in his 3 years here. The team was competitive all 3 years despite substandard goaltending the first two years and was an upper echelon team the last year.
I'm a "diehard Clones fan" and I only hope that the next Cyclones coach is up to the standards set by Jarrod Skalde.
I don't mean to come down on you too hard, but I don't think that you're being fair about Skalde.

Jarrod Sklade is a terrific coach. Cyclones fans would have realized that if they had a better understanding of the game and the challenges that come with coaching a minor pro team.
Simply put, Skalde is a better coach than Chuck Weber. He didn't win any Kelly Cups or take the team to the finals, but that isn't the measure of how good a coach someone is. Two of the best head coaches in the NHL are Barry Trotz in Nashville and Dave Tippett in Phoenix. How many Stanley Cups have they won? How many times have they taken teams deep into the playoffs? Yet, if they were to become available they'd be the top candidates for any team looking to fill an opening for a head coach. |

#1-Steve Martinson looks like he's complacent with his job in Allen, seeing as though he just won the CHL title with them... and I agree that as long as Malcolm Cameron is not the coach this year, we will be fine, although I will point out that his season here we went to within a game of the Finals... but he still sucked.
#2-After reading the rebuttals from you guys, I decided to remove my comment from earlier... I thought about what I said and it brought be back to the preseason game in '09 when I felt we had played flat with a stripped down roster, and I forget who it was who always sat next to Oscar... the guy with the glasses who seems to always want to piss me off lol... he and I had a discussion and I wailed on the team for basically re-doing the whole roster... the last thing he asked me before we parted ways for the night was "Was the Kelly Cup worth it?"... so yeah I can buy into the fact that we pretty much have no say over who comes and goes, we just have to work with what we have on the roster... but that roster STILL won the Kelly Cup the next summer.
That being said, I am willing to admit in a way that I am being a little too hard on Jarrod Skalde... he was brought in by the man who shaped the current form of our organization when we came back after our hiatus, so I just expected at least some form of Chuck in Jarrod, and for the most part we got it. Jarrod WAS a good judge of character when it came to landing his own players (Aubin and Embach as just a few examples) and he knew how to get them to win, yes... Chuck Weber used his role as the coach/exec of the Rampage to continue sending great caliber players to Cincinnati for Jarrod to develop, and I admit that it wasnt exactly Chuck's call to take the players Florida sent to him, which when your NHL team finishes dead last on a constant basis and has only one lucky season in between, it means the talent pool in the Triple-A level eventually sinks... I would say Nashville too but the year-end roster only had three Predators-linked players.
Part of what incited my rage towards Jarrod is that Cincinnati was the only team in the Nashville OR Florida family to not make the playoffs in 2012 when Florida won their division, Nashville made it to the second round, and Milwaukee and San Antonio made good runs in the playoffs... my theory is that the success of an NHL team should trickle down to the ECHL, which is pretty much the most recognized entry level league hockey has. (in my opinion the SPHL and FHL are inferior... for that matter the CHL is too)
I am not flipping my position as to what I expect when you have the task of developing good talent and winning with it... but even I'll say okay I wasnt quite being fair, so ill congratulate Jarrod on his elevation to the AHL... but I will continue to hold coaches to a big standard here, and if you all have good ideas of more reasonable standards I would love to hear them all
... luckily for all of us I had second thoughts after remembering being asked if winning the Kelly Cup was worth a from-scratch roster... |

It might be worth giving Terry Ruskowski a call. He has NHL playing experience, more than 600 career coaching victories and he would probably like the idea of getting back into affiliated hockey. |

Terry Ruskowski was one of my favorite players when he played in the WHA with Houston and Winnipeg and in the NHL with Chicago, LA, Pittsburgh. He was captain of several teams he played for and became a good coach, but he's too intense and emotional so he wasn't able to have any sustained success in the places he's been a head coach. |

Actually, Reggie and Donnie, you guys might be on to something... He made Laredo into a machine, eight out of nine years at least winning one playoff series, four straight trips to the finals, two titles... and he coached Florida's A-level team so he's familiar to the Panthers system... He would be a good choice... only problem is will he want to leave Quad City? |

Cman, that's a legitimate question. Rusko has had a lot of success in the CHL. However, there has to be a certain appeal to being in an affiliated league and developing players for the future. Unless, of course, he doesn't want to deal with the transactional headaches of the ECHL. In the CHL, you can pretty much build a team and not have to make daily roster moves. But he'd fun to have behind the bench. Case in point: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3k9pMQMY0fQ |
