Sorry to disagree with you Scuba but the ice size is an issue. Google the issue and you will see lots of things written before the Olympics of what adjustments need to be made. Same ice for both teams but Alaska has played 36 games plus playoffs on it and Cyclones none except two pre-season games. And the key point is that all it takes is one mistake such as the goalie moving off the post too early because the angle has changed or the defense opening up a shooting zone too wide chasing the puck to the side wall, and the winning goal can be scored. Will that happen? I don't know but it is an added factor. You can bet that the Cyclone coaches are talking about it and how to adjust. For example, when watching the games watch how little time is spent fighting for the puck on the side walls. The #1 rule in adjusting is not to chase the puck to the walls like you do in the NA rinks. It is much more of a zone defense and packing it in. In any event. GO CLONES. Bring it home |

I think both bags and Scuba make valid points. The rink size is definitely a factor. The unknown is how well the Cyclones will adjust to it. I think it should help offensively. Sure the West is known for speed and finesse but our guys aren't exactly slow and I'm really looking forward to seeing the likes of Megan, Shaw and Lewis operate in the added space. The questions are how well they'll defend the extra space and how well Madore can adapt. Madore is small and therefore aggressive which is great on North American ice but it he gets too aggressive on the big sheet he'll get in trouble in a hurry. He did play in the 2nd preseason game, so he's been on it before, but he didn't exactly have a great outing. The up side is Hellberg played his early career in Sweden. I'm not saying he gets a start but he may have some very valuable insight to pass along. |

OK, be aware of rink size, but I wouldn't let it scare you. as for fighting for the puck.....Man, I wouldn't simply sit back in a zone and let them walk the puck in either...I suppose you have to walk a very thin line here. I believe we started Darling game one of preseason, I think he registered a win....without looking did Darling have international experience? My biggest concern is this, let the Clones play their game regardless of rink size, if I was going to experiment, game one would be the game. If it gets away from us then adjust. I think our best game plan...and mind you I'm NO coach, I think it is just as dangerous for the Aces to face a eastern team playing eastern style hockey then it would be for us to try to adjust to the Aces play and rink size. We haven't played on the bigger Ice, but the Aces hasn't face eastern grinder hockey either. Like I said, the only uneasiness I get from this series is who knows how this is going to go, all three playoff rounds, especially Fort Wayne I knew for certain they were going to be grinders. I have no idea how this is going to play out....good discussion however, cheers |

Nice comments Elvis. I agree the vast major it of the adjustments are on defense including the forwards coming back etc. Nice pick up on Hellberg's experience with the ice and also Rob's aggressiveness . I think he needs to stay a bit more in the cage and crease area on this big ice. Also hope the guys have been able to quickly adjust to to the four hour time difference. Games won't be over in regulation till about 2AM our time.
As matter of complete trivia, sunset tonight in Anchorage is 11.14 PM there time ( 4 hours after the game begins) or 3:14 AM Saturday our time. The game will be over and it will still be daylight up there. And I thought Cleveland was a ****ed up place to live!! |

And here is a question, is western hockey all that different, is there are noticable difference between western and eastern play? and is the difference caused by the rink size? I cannot imagine the talent is all that better. same goes for all levels of proffesional play, are American league baseball different other than the designated hitter. Is there a difference between AFC and NFC football play and why, or is it in OUR heads. Kinda off topic regarding the baseball and football but maybe a valid question as it relates to playing the Aces and our preception of the west coast. |

The problem with Rob staying more in the cage is that he gives up a lot in doing so. As a small goalie he has to come out to cut the shooting angles down, if he stays back shooters get a lot to look at.
In that 1st preseason game the 'Clones did start Darling. I haven't looked at his resume but by default he's going to be better off on the big ice. As a larger goalie he can sit back a little more and let the play come to him. Hopefully Robbie got a good look at things in today's morning skate.
The difference in play has nothing to do with the rink size but in the level of physicality. Based on my observation the West is much less physical than the East. I recall both Vegas and Idaho commenting on how physical those Cyclones teams were. I couldn't even venture to think what Idaho would have said had they matched up with the 2010 Charlotte or South Carolina games. While I don't think the 'Clones should change things up and start chasing hits since it could put them out of position really quickly, I do think that if there is a time to emphasize having the guys "finish their bumps" it would be now.
I don't think the skill level is any better or worse but I think the overall level of competition is less in the West. There's no doubt the 'Clones have seen a lot more adversity and bigger challenges in their journey to reach the finals than Alaska. |

Go to the clones website and click the schedule and you will find the two pre season games.
Game one we won 4-2 with Darling stopping 27 of 29 shots. Goals were scored by MacDonald, Saponari, Embach, and Aubin (empty net.). Not much there that is relevant
Clones lost game 2 6-4 with Madoes stopping 20 of 26 shots. Goals were Eves, Alimeida (2) and McFadden. |

Three things going against the players probably kicked in late 2nd period. 1st. Travel 13 hrs from Cincinnati to Alaska 2nd. Larger ice surface to cover 3rd. 11:15 PM Cincinnati start time.
If Alaska leaves Tuesday after the game, they have one day for travel, one day to rest, one day to skate on the ice and finally play on the 4th day. True killer if we have to go back for game 7 with play on the 2nd day. I know Alaska does the same but to their home rink. |

What a game last night! Glad they were able to close the deal. I really hope Dalhuisen can come back for the games in Cincinnati to be a physical presence in front of the net. Madore could use some help moving people out of the way.

Thanks for the Youtube link. Like I saw in Vegas, Alaska likes to come hard at the goalie with no chance of stopping. Our goalies will be constantly roughed up due to this style of play. We have to be under control and not get foolish penalties trying to retaliate. I think a little sleep after game 1 was the magic we needed for game 2. Hope team spends the night watching game 7 of Blackhawks- Kings and comes out tomorrow night ready to play Eastern ECHL hockey ! |

Based on Nick's call, the video highlights and SOG, this may have been a game that Madore stole. And it couldn't have come at a better time.
I agree, the Cyclone need to protect Madore and keep the doorstep clean. They could really use a big body for that detail. |

So we have discussed how the bigger ice surface in Alaska plays a factor in this series.......any views on the smaller ice surface? Does Cincinnati get the advantage here or does it even the teams up.
I would also like to think that being home again would give us an advantage however I fear that Reds game are going to put a great big crapolla on that. Every garage on the banks will be for pass holders and such and pretty much suck. I would like to believe that US bank would be filled but i'm not having pleasant thoughts about attendance. |

To add to it the Red's game starts 30 minutes earlier on a workday (Friday and Monday) and the Saturday is a 4PM start, so their crowd will still mainly be there. As for the smaller surface, the advantage can be ours if the refs don't let Alaska get away with more contact due to closer play. Alaska is use to longer passes and we can use this to our advantage. Alaska likes to open skate and we need to tighten their field. That how a far inferior Las Vegas team stayed in the game. CONTROL PHYSICAL is the secret. Hit but don't take yourself out of the play with penalties or missed hits resulting in breakaways. |

Carriveaux, Madore stopped 35 of 36 shots on Saturday.
It's my belief that playing in USBA will slow down the Ace some. With the larger rink, they're able use the additional space to create plays, gain the zone with speed and cycle the puck more easily. Here, the Cyclone can force them to the outside and disrupt a lot of their offense by playing the body more, which they can't do as regularly on the bigger ice.
Looking forward to tonight's game 3!!!! |
